I think you state one main problem with the commonly used technologies of today, being the computer, cell phone, ipod, etc. The general public uses technology for pleasure, often mindlessly. We often "play" with these technologies and lose a bit of what it means to be human and to advance our cause. If people decided to read some document online during the times that they choose to play a game, they would end up much smarter and better off. While walking around I pass many people with ipods in their ears. With little acknowledgement of myself or others around, they continue walking with no interaction. We don't notice or distinguish the different bird sounds when we cannot hear them. We can only feel the breeze and not hear its strength. As you mention Lorenz may be correct in that we have lost our connection with both the wild nature and the interactive and mental expanding nature of the human being. We would much rather associate with earbuds and flat screens.

You exhibit well the "healthy dose of skepticism" regarding these technologies, present and future, Ryan. I wonder if adaptability and survival of the fittest could be profitably applied to the regular uses of these ingratiating technologies. Are we becoming too "soft," too accustomed to customizing everything for our particular pleasure? Should there be a 12-step program? Konrad Lorenz, the ethologist, wrote an eye-opening book in the late 70's "Civilized Man's Eight Deadly Sins," which raised serious questions about our survivability given that we've risen so far above the immediate touch of nature through our technology. What would he have to say today?!

Tammi, I was thinking the same thing. Would this tutorial help or be applicable with Microsoft word 2007? Ryan, I too have not had much if any experience in working with designing a website so the more information we share with each other the more we will learn.

This sounds like an interesting site and tutorial. I might visit it to understand more of the interworkings of a web page. I don't know if you realized it but Microsoft word 2007 has a web page template as one of it's document styles. Would that work with the information from the tutorial? Could you use the tutorial to help students build a web page once you purchased the software?

This review gave me some more to consider about how to use websites in my classroom. I really think that students can use more activities that engage the knowledge of DNA in real world usage. This website does supply the students with the opportunity to explore.

What a great place to look for information- musuem websites. I had never thought about that. As a fellow biology fan, I enjoyed this review and found parts of it could be useful in the classroom supplementing the basic teaching of DNA. The other option you could do is to let the students try one of the games first and try to have them figure out the significance of DNA sequencing in this lesson. It might promote some higher order thinking through inductive reasoning. Just a thought :)
Have a great weekend!

I agree with both of you, the Smartboard is definately a good tool, but teaching is still teaching and guiding. It's interpersonal communication in an impersonal world.

Now all that remains is to figure out the best possible method for utilizing the Smartboard for creating lesson plans that are interactive as well as full of higher order thinking.

I like your point that as educators we must still be guiding the class. I think we need to have a louder voice as educators that we can not be simply erased by digital technology- the human experience has more impact and more meaning. That is not to say that digital technology can't be used but in conjunction with minds on/hands on human experiences.

We should never wait for a technology to teach a subject or topic. We might find ourselves waiting a very long time. Technologies should be developed to aid our teaching, we should not develop lessons to utilize available or up-and-coming technologies simply for the novelty of the technology. I think we will find teaching much more rewarding if we are driving the technology and not the other way around.
